Global flood defence specialist, Flood Control International (FCI), has been awarded a contract by MWH Treatment, on behalf of Thames Water Utilities, to deliver flood resilience works to a number of sites, as part of Thames’ Flood Resilience Programme.
The contract, worth in excess of £1.5M, requires FCI to provide protection measures to protect four sites against a 0.5% probability (1-in-200-year flood risk) fluvial, pluvial or groundwater flood event, including 300mm freeboard allowance for climate change.
The solutions include side hinged floodgates, vertically hinged pivot floodgates, slot-in barriers, steel plate walls and other solutions specific to each site, with FCI undertaking site surveys, design calculations, drawings and quality documentation packs, as well as the manufacture of equipment, installation and installation co-ordination.
FCI recently designed supplied and installed a four-sided sealing swing floodgate for the Sally Port in Portsmouth.
This historic structure is the last doorway in England that Admiral Nelson walked through as he boarded HMS Victory and left for Trafalgar.
Strict historical constraints meant that the sill could not be altered and all fixings had to match the existing stone beds.
A 10ft high water pressure imposed significant loads onto these fixings, and the restricted operating area meant that every element had very tight tolerances for the gate to swing close and seal correctly.
The elegant and effective design accomplishes all of the requirements and has been praised for its fit and appearance.
FCI recently installed a glass floodwall for the Shore Hotel on the Isle of Man. The infinity edge design gives great visibility and stainless steel posts mean that the system has a 100year design life. An etched ‘disruption pattern’ ensures birds can see and avoid the glass barrier alongside the river.
FCI installed a fully removable combination flood barrier and flood gate to protect a water company’s site from flooding. A swing floodgate allows easy access, with the demountable aluminium floodwall maintaining a protected height of 5ft / 1.5m. The entire assembly can easily be removed for access to equipment when required.
FCI recently installed 12 floodgates and 60m/ 200ft of glass floodwall to properties in York, just before Storm Franklin hit.
The flood protection worked perfectly and prevented the buildings from flooding. Combining glass and floodgates is a great way to protect against flooding whilst maintaining views of the river.
With no top rail, the glass floodwall is good looking and is not obtrusive.
A SAMS Club store in Cleveland Ohio recently installed nine automatic floodgates to protect against and future flooding.
The store has a history of suffering from floods, and FCI’s drop down floodgates were selected as they can be rapidly deployed by push button, and the installation could be completed with no effect on store operations.
