Flood Control International recently installed and tested 34 Self Closing Flood Barrier units as part of the Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme. These barriers are discreetly integrated into the masonry walling and remain hidden when lowered. When floodwaters rise, they automatically activate using the floodwater’s power, adding 1 meter (3′-4″) of flood protection. This safeguards the town from a 0.5% / 1-in-200-year event, with an extra allowance for climate change. Additionally, FCI provided flood-proof glass walling, flood windows, and swing floodgates.
Flood Control International was appointed to provide a suitable flood control system. After a consultation period, the stop log flood barrier, which is tested to a height of 7ft, achieving excellent performance, was selected.
FCI’s production facilities are currently full with five large sliding/ rolling floodgates for jobs in Boston, California and Australia, as well as smaller swing gates and glass floodwall systems.
Efficient design and fabrication are essential in getting these large flood gates – up to 30ft(10m) long and 8ft(2.4m) high in these instances – to our clients to meet installation schedules.
Paeroa residents were saved from flooding yesterday when FCI’s sliding floodgates were operated to close off State Highway 26 in New Zealand and protect the town.
The double sliding floodgates were installed in 2018 and are 22metres wide (70ft) by 3metres high(10ft). Floodwater from the river reached 2metres height at its maximum.
As soon as the river levels reduced the state highway was quickly able to be reopened to traffic.

An additional top rail is used to the required edge protection height, saving glass and cost where it is not needed.
