Flip Up Flood Barrier Patent Filed

Flood Control International now has a Patent Pending for an innovative Multi-Span Flip Up Flood Barrier.

This new design of flood barrier allows for multiple flip up units to operate together without the need for intermediate posts, and can provide flood protection over an unlimited length.

In an undeployed state, the barrier is indistinguishable from the surrounding floor surface; it sits perfectly level within the surrounding ground and can house a range of surface finishes to suit most environments.

There are no exposed seals or gaskets and current designs are up to 12ft (4 metres) tall.

We're supporting the Environment Agency!

We’re supporting the Environment Agency Flood Action Campaign.

In England there are over 5 million homes at risk of flooding, with the average cost of flooding to a home standing at around £30,000. Flooding also brings a significant risk to life.

The campaign is focused on helping people know what action to take in a flood, based on the EA’s Prepare. Act. Survive. flood guide.

Flood Barriers over Railways Lines Installed

Flood Control International recently designed and supplied a flood barrier system to Balfour Beatty and the Environment Agency to protect the notorious Cowley Bridge junction.

This area has flooded several times causing mass washouts, damage to infrastructure and delay or suspension of all train services. The flood barrier system uses a below ground cut-off beam, sectional rubber bungs to surround the rails, and then a demountable barrier to raise the flood protection height up to 3ft (900mm) above ground level. The removable posts and beams are securely stored adjacent to the location and full erection takes under 10 minutes, meaning deployment can be left until just before required, rather than significantly in advance as is the problem with other solutions tried at this location, keeping trains running for longer, and with speedier recovery after any flood.

Glass Floodwall Test Panel installed at Sidmouth in the BBC News

Flood Control International’s glass flood barriers were featured in a BBC piece in Sidmouth. A test panel of engineered flood glass design to withstand impact loads during storm events was installed at the seafront in Sidmouth as a trial against the coastal shingle thrown up by waves. The next few months will see if the glass is adopted for the entire coastal defence scheme.

This trial, in partnership with the Environment Agency and local government, is set up to see if investment in a significant glass floodwall project would be suitable for the exposed location.

Flood Control International’s design of the marine grade stainless steel framing and the glass itself is ideally suited to seafront locations.
