Flood Control International recently installed nine flood gates to various areas in the BRM metals handling plant at Gravesend.
The lift-hinged vehicle flood gates are 4.5m wide and 1.1m high and were all fully tested by placing a demountable barrier to the ‘wet’ side and filling the gap with water.
All flood gates passed with flying colours. The client stated that he had “been impressed with the flood gates, your gate fitters (working in a testing environment) and the professional work you have provided from start to finish of this project.”
FCI Recently installed fully automatic flood gates for the main entrance at McVities in Carlisle. The factory was badly affected by flooding in December 2015, and FCI were contacted to design supply and install a number of flood defence solutions including manual flood gates, floodproof glazing, flood doors and demountable barriers.
To allow security guards to see through the floodgates, the top sections of these incorporate floodproof glass panels 0.5m high.
Flood Control International recently factory-tested one of four massive Flip Up Flood Barriers destined for NYU Hospital in New York.
Each barrier is 10 metres wide and 4 metres high, with three of them interconnecting to provide a 30 metre wide 4 metre high flood defence. The flood barrier decks usually provide the surface of the loading dock with 40 tonne vehicles driving over them.
When activated, the flood barrier rises using hydraulic rams with the inflating seals operating when in position. In total over 160 square metres of flood barrier can be made operational in under 15 minutes with no manual effort.
The flood barrier seals were also water tested at full 4 metre flood protection height.
Flood Control International recently installed 18 demountable flood barriers at a storage facility at Alexander Docks, Hull. The barriers, up to 25metres long, allow a level threshold and are fully removable giving clear access when not in use.
Flood Control International’s floodbarriers are FM Global approved, and are designed to withstand flood loads as well as impact loading.
Sainsbury’s has recently awarded Flood Control International the contract to supply 800metres of Boxwall flood barrier.
The lightweight Boxwall flood barrier units are ideal for rapid deployment and link together to form long continuous runs, protecting to 500mm high. One Boxwall unit replaces 10 standard sandbags, but weighs less than 1/5th of one sandbag.
100m of each barrier is to be kept in each of eight regional depots for rapid response to any threatened flood event.
Flood Control International was commissioned to design, supply and install a full Flood Protection Solution to the airport facility. The whole perimeter was to be protected to 1.2m in height. A specialised design was required to ensure the facility operations were not disrupted.
Devastating floods in 2015 affected Nairobi Airport’s ‘African Freight Services’ facility. The flooding had destroyed goods in storage and transit, as well as X-Ray machines, materials handling equipment and electrical installations, and future contracts required measures installed to prevent re-occurrence.
In advance of Hurricane season, New York facilities such as NYU Hospital and Wall Street Plaza have been trail fitting their Flood Control barriers. Flood barriers up to 10ft high were installed, and floodproof doors checked. As maintenance teams change or move on, it is important to train new staff as well as check and maintain components so that in an emergency all the flood barriers can be erected correctly in good time.
As part of the flood protection for a new build property, large flood-proof windows were designed, supplied and installed by Flood Control International. Up to 2.2m in height, the floodproof windows provide permanent protection with no visual intrusion.
Specially designed glazing and stainless steel frames are suitable for flood heights up to full height.
Between Terminals 3 and 5 at Heathrow Airport is a fuel tank farm that now has a new automatic sliding flood gate, by Flood Control International. The flood gate automatically seals if a fuel spill is detected. Flood Control International was selected to design, supply and install the spill control gate to COMAH standards. Operation of the gate is by client controlled fobs or from their control room, with safety features such as safety edges and light beams in case of obstruction. Special seals were selected to withstand the fuel types being stored on the site, and equipment within the bund is all ATEX rated. Installation airside in such a busy airport posed several new challenges that were overcome with great assistance and cooperation by the client and site team.
Flood Control International recently protected a substation for Manx Utilities at Castletown, Isle of Man. Castletown suffered severe flooding in January 2014 from storm and tidal surges.
The simple slot-in flood barrier can be installed behind the substation doors, and means that personnel do not need to fetch, fill and place sandbags each time there is a flood warning.
Flood Control International recently installed and tested a 3.5m wide 1.7m high aluminium lift-hinged flood gate as part of the Selkirk Flood Alleviation Scheme. This type of flood gate is ideal for vehicle and public access as there is no step or ramp at ground level.
The successful water test utilised one our standard demountable flood barriers to retain the full height of water on the ‘wet side’ of the gate.
The test assessed the installation, the flood gate and our demountable system all at the same time.
Flood Control International’s unique flood doors with dead level thresholds have been ordered for the Miami Museum of Science.
The flood doors use Kevlar-reinforced inflating seals and an automated inflation device to form a full watertight seal when triggered.
Standard doors were considered unsuitable due to the normal raised threshold.
Flood Control International has just been awarded an Alliance Strategic Agreement for Flood Resilience Services and Products for Thames Water sites. The framework is for up to 6 years and involves the survey, design, supply and installation of flood defence solutions for approximately 50 water and wastewater treatment sites.
Tim Collingwood – FCI’s managing director said, “This long term agreement allows for real efficiencies and innovation, with the development and implementation of savings through finding the most appropriate flood protection solution for the many assets on each site.
We are really looking forward to productive and engaging relationship with Eight2O and Thames Water.”
Flood Control International was recently awarded the contract to protect the Transglobal airfreight facility at Nairobi Airport.
The scheme involves the protection of over 30 openings up to 7metres wide and 1.2m high, as well as the installation of pumps, valves and other protections.
The supply and installation contract is due to be completed May 2016.
Flood Control International attended the excellent Flood and Coast 2016 conference and expo at Telford International Centre.
Great to meet old and new clients as well as fellow exhibitors.
A visitor to Looe in Cornwall recently sent us photographs of a couple of our floodbarrier systems installed in advance of expected flooding.
The NOAQ Tubewall and Boxwall are lightweight mobile flood barriers ideal for situations where foundations are not desirable and flood depths up to 1metre are required. Both flood defence systems are suitable for long lengths and are portable and easy to install. Boxwall units weigh only 3kg for 600mm length and a 10m long 500mm high tubewall takes only 2minutes to erect.
Flood Control International recently installed six new floodgates in North Wales as part of the sea wall flood defence scheme. Our stainless steel floodgates use a unique lift-hinge mechanism to allow the gates to swing freely and also to seal on a dead level threshold. The use of ‘duplex’ stainless steel was to keep the gates pristine in even the harshest marine environment.
