Funding to protect households and businesses against flooding

Following the devastating floods of the past weeks the government has announced additional funding to assist households and businesses in recovery and protecting against future flooding. This ‘helping people help themselves’ approach is in addition to the major flood defence schemes being progressed, and hopefully now accelerated, through the Environment Agency.

Floodbarriers in Cumbria in operation again

Sadly many parts of northern England are underwater again as storm Eva brings further flooding. However, at least some of the flood defences that were overtopped by the record flood levels of storm Desmond have held up to this new bout of flooding. BBC News’s report on the flooding showed a number of Flood Control International’s demountable flood barriers holding back the floodwater at Appleby, one of the worst affected areas.

Floodgates and Flood Doors installed In Australia

FCI recently installed a number of flood doors and floodgates at Bunnings Warehouse in Brisbane, Australia. The project required flood doors that were always floodproof when shut, as well as two large steel lift-hinged floodgates 2.5m high and 4m wide. These work on a level threshold and so are ideal for vehicle entrances and where public access is required. In-situ testing on the gates was undertaken with great success.

Glass Flood Barriers installed at Primary School

Flood Control International has just completed the installation of a new glass flood barrier at Powell’s C of E Primary School in Cirencester. The school is located next to a culvert that carries overflow from storm drains and local water courses and has caused severe flooding at the school.

The architect specified a glass floodwall in order to enhance the light entering the classrooms.

Access to the site was challenging; all equipment and materials had to be transported around the outside of the confined site and a specialised spider crane was manoeuvred up the culvert in order to lift the glass sections into place. All work had to be complete within the half-term holiday.

The glass floodwall was successfully installed on time and the client was very pleased with both the product and installation.

Innovative Solution to flood-protect steel framed buildings

FCI recently completed the flood protection of a live control building on a power station site in Reading. The steel framed building required permanent protection to 1m. There was no additional room available for an external barrier/wall, and the building had to be kept secure at the end of each shift.

The solution adopted was to cut the cladding to 1m high and install new powder coated aluminium demountable barriers on the line of the existing cladding. The cladding was cut and barriers installed one section at a time, so that operations within and outside the building were not disrupted at all.. The openings were fitted with flood proof doors and a flood gate. The end result is a smart flood proofed building on the exact same footprint as the old leaky one!

Flood-proof Glass Tests Successful

All of our glass flood barrier systems are fully designed to the latest Eurocodes. We allow for water loads and also impact loads as required. Now our specially designed glass has been tested to the EN356 ‘Hard Body Impact’ P5A requirement for ‘Enhanced Protection’.

As well as offering protection against vandalism, the test is also there to simulate stones picked up by waves and thrown against the glass. The test involves dropping a 4.1kg steel ball 9 metres onto each of three panes of glass 9 times. To pass the test, the ball can’t get through any one of the panes. Our design of glass was in fact so robust that on two of the three test panes you could not even see that the glass had been hitat all! This test gives our clients confidence in the longevity of our system.

River Ness Floodgates installed in Inverness

Flood Control International has recently installed 11 floodgates in both phases 1 and 2 of the River Ness Flood Protection Scheme. Four sliding gates were installed at either end of the historic Greig Street Footbridge in the centre of town, which disappear into the adjacent walls when not in use. A number of double-lift-hinged gates have also been installed around the docks are with widths up to 8metres wide and heights up to 1.5metres. These gates have a level threshold to allow for heavy vehicle movements.

Sliding Floodgates installed at two sites

Flood Control International recently installed sliding floodgates for clients National Grid and Northern Powergrid. The gates run on a dead level threshold meaning that vehicle access is uninterrupted. Automatic operation means that the sites are permanently affected and do not need manual input to operate.

Hydraulic Rams added to EA Floodgates

As part of the Environment Agency’s asset recovery works following the 2014 storms, Flood Control International was commissioned to design and install a number of hydraulic ram assemblies to enable existing gates to operate safely in high winds.

Due to the coastal environment, the stainless steel rams were further protected with stainless steel shrouds to prevent wind-blown sand getting to the mechanisms. As the gates were all existing, every design was bespoke to accommodate existing features, opening arcs, and design loads. The photograph shows a multiple jointed linkage and ram on one of the gates treated.

London Substations Protected from Floods

Flood Control International has recently protected a number of London Substations, using a range of floodgates and flood barriers. Our Pivot barriers were specified on many openings due to their ease of use, cost effectiveness and dependability. Other solutions employed included swing gates, demountable barriers and retro-fitting watertight seals to existing doors.

Dolphins in Dubai get Flood Barriers Installed

The prestigious ‘Atlantis’ resort in Dubai selected FCI’s demountable flood barriers and bespoke floodgates to allow it to reline its entire dolphin habitat without disrupting operations. 10,000 cubic metres of water was removed to a depth of 3metres with the remaining pools (and dolphins) unaffected. FCI’s design was selected as it required no underwater cutting or drilling, and because it could be fully removed with no danger or obstruction to the dolphins. Installation of over 100metres of barrier, and five gates was undertaken over two nights and the pool drained to allow lining works to commence.

6m x 1.5m high floodgate installed in Staines

Flood Control International recently installed a steel floodgate as part of a new office development at Lotus Park in Staines. Staines suffered badly from the 2014 River Thames Flood, and so a new floodwall and floodgate were required as part of the development. The 6metre wide by 1.5metre high steel floodgate operates using Flood Control International’s Lift-Hinge design meaning that it is able to operate with a level threshold, with no step or ramp required at ground level.

John Lewis Kingston Gets Double Pivot Flood Gates

The John Lewis store at Kingston recently gained a new flood barrier to protect against flooding from the River Thames. The innovative double-pivot flood barrier is designed to fit in-front of an existing demountable flood barrier that was installed when the store was built. The existing protection is up to 2.1metres high, and the time taken to erect this system meant that store deliveries would have to be delayed whenever the store was on high flood alert.

This new barrier is easy to operate – it uses gas struts to take the weight when raising and lowering – and is designed to take the initial 500mm of floodwater, should flooding occur. The barrier gives a clear opening of 6.9 metres – enough for two lanes of delivery lorries. The 500mm flood protection would then give the store staff enough time to erect the full 2.1metre high barrier behind it should flooding occur.

Temporary Flood Barriers used to test floodgates

FCI recently used our temporary water-filled flood barriers to test a couple of refurbished gates for the Environment Agency at King’s Lynn. The lightweight barriers come flat-packed and are rolled into shape before positioning and filling with water.

The 10m long test was set up in two hours and taken down in one hour, with no waste or any sign that there had recently been 1metre of water there. The barriers are ideal as a temporary flood protection measure during constructionworks on a floodwall, or as a very transportable emergency flood barrier.

Automatic Pivot Barrier installed for National Grid

Flood Control International recently installed a fully automatic pivot barrier for National Grid. The barrier works from a flood sensor or can be pro-actively operated via push-button, and works on a dead level threshold.

Safety sensors ensure that the barrier will not operate if the opening is obstructed in accordance with regulations. Available in Manual or Automatic, the Pivot barriers are effective and do not requyire the operating area for normal swing gates.

These contracts follow on from our recent contact for flood barriers for the new Emergency Centre at NYU Hospital.

The contracts are to be delivered between now and 2017, as construction of the new buildings develops.
