Flood Control School Visit

Flood Control International was recently contacted by Fairmead School and asked if a representative could visit for a careers day.

Fairmead School is a school for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. We sent one of our Design Managers along to talk to the students about flood prevention and the wider water management and engineering industry. The classes were very hands on with the students building their own flood defences. The budding engineers were also provided with a demo system that they could assemble to get a feel for the different materials and mechanisms that operate a real-life flood barrier.

The feedback from the students and the teachers (as well as our Design Manager) was fantastic!

Road Crossing Flood Gate Installed in New Zealand

Flood Control International recently installed a 20m wide by 3m high double sliding flood gate across a State Highway in New Zealand. The flood gate works on a level ground-beam with special swing-out braces to take the water loads.

The flood gate replaces a large demountable barrier that used to take up to 15 operatives 4 hours to install each time it was required. This was a serious disruption to a State Highway, with a 26km diversionary route.

With the new flood gates, the road can be protected by only 2-3 operatives in under 20 minutes.

Demountable Flood Barriers for Distillery

Flood Control International recently installed a demountable flood barrier on the Scottish island of Islay for the Ardbeg whisky distillery.

The 10m wide, 1.5m high demountable barrier has four spans and is fully removable when not in use leaving the area clear for pedestrian access.

With bespoke storage nearby, the flood defence system takes just 20 minutes to install for two operatives.

FLOOD GATE MODIFICATIONS PROVE A SUCCESS

Flood Control International was recently engaged by the Environment Agency in the UK to modify a number of old flood gates that were ineffective at Stonely UK.

The gates had been supplied in the 1990s by another company, and were ineffective in recent floods.

Flood Control International’s innovative solution was to change the way the gate sealed by introducing a lift and lower hinge that meant that sealing was aided by the weight of the flood gate. All seals were replaced as well as the modifications to the hinge mechanism, and now the flood gates are 100% effective, at a fraction of the price for new flood gates that would have been required had the existing ones not been modified.

Flood Gates Installed and Tested at Buncefield Oil Depot

The oil depot at Buncefield has been completely rebuilt after its devastating explosion in 2005.

Flood Control International was selected to design and install five oil containment gates for the entrances to the site.

Strict limitations on operational requirements and minimal allowable leakage rates meant that new seals had to be developed and automated gate operation installed as two of the gates will be constant access entrance / egress gates.

Both sliding and lift-hinged swing gates were designed, up to 10 metres wide and 2.85 metres high.

Innovative Flood Gates Shipping to New Zealand

Flood Control International has just completed design and fabrication of some new sliding flood gates for a project in New Zealand.

The gates are to protect a town by closing off a roadway 21 metres wide and 2.7metres high (69ft x 9ft).

The twin flood gates will replace an existing demountable flood barrier which, due to its size, requires a large amount of manpower and time to install in advance of a flood.

As the road is a busy highway, the time closed off needed to be minimised. Also, there could be no step or trough to guide/ support the gate due to it being across a highway, and the possibility of any trough filling with debris/ ice/ water.

The two leaves of the flood gate are winched horizontally into position and then lowered on their wheels to form a fully watertight barrier.

Swing-out braces on the back of the flood gate locate into the groundbeam and are supported on the existing concrete foundations from the demountable flood barriers, thereby saving the need for extensive excavation and concreting works to support such a massive gate with high flood loads

Sliding Flood Gate in Dover Pumping Station

Flood Control International recently installed and commissioned a Sliding Flood Gate in Dover, UK to protect a water company pumping station.

This manual Sliding Flood Gate operates without the need for an in-ground trough which can fill with water or debris or ice, and can be fully closed by one operative within five minutes.

The Sliding Flood Gate’s innovative system allows it to lower onto its base seal when in the closed position to create a watertight seal.

Glass Floodwall at New Ross, Ireland

Flood Control International is completing a Glass Floodwall project at New Ross In southern Ireland. The Glass Floodwall varies in height from 600mm to 1200mm, and provides permanent protection against flooding with no intervention required.

A solid wall would have been unacceptable in this attractive town, and Flood Control International’s Glass Floodwall with stainless steel framing was chosen as a durable, dependable solution that enhances the public area as well as provides full height flood protection.

The design allows for impact loading and also a sacrificial lamination in each glass pane so that even if one pane would crack, the full height water level is still contained.

Flood Gate at Lower Don, Sheffield

Flood Control International recently added double flood gates to an historic bridge as part of the ‘Lower Don Flood Relief Scheme’ in Sheffield, UK.

The flood gates had to integrate with the existing steel plate bridge, and also open ‘up slope’ into the bridge.

Flood Control International’s ‘Lift-Hinged Gates’ were chosen as they could rise when open to store correctly up the slope, and work on dead level thresholds, so that public access was not affected by a slope or ramp.

The central post is fully removable, although there is pedestrian access only over the bridge.

The gate is one of 28 flood gates, flood doors and flood barriers delivered as part of the scheme.
