NEW EA Flood Maps for Stormwater Issued

New Flood Maps for the UK have been released this week. For the first time the flood maps show properties and businesses at risk of surface water flooding as well as those affected by river and sea flooding. The maps indicate 3million properties at risk of flash flooding from rainfall on top of the 2.4million previously identified at risk of river and sea flooding

Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, Dr Paul Leinster, said: “Last week’s storm surge brings into sharp focus how important it is that people know if they could be affected by flooding. Being prepared can save lives, homes, personal possessions and businesses. Our thoughts are with those who were flooded.

“We have used cutting edge technology to map areas at risk of surface water flooding in England. These maps are now amongst the most comprehensive in the world.

“With one in six homes in England at risk of flooding we urge people to check if they are at risk, and sign up to free river and coastal flood warnings, by visiting the Environment Agency website.”

Wells next the Sea Barriers Protect Town

Flood Control International’s new Glass Floodwall protected Wells Next the Sea from the largest tidal surge since 1953 last night. Other areas not protected by our flood defence were inundated as sea levels rose to 1.8m higher than normal, but the western side of town – which was devastated in 1953 was well protected and survived unscathed.

Government Publishes Response to Flood Insurance Consultation

The government has just published its response to the public consultation on securing the future availability and affordability of home insurance in areas of flood risk.

The intended way forward has been called ‘Flood Re’ and in effect will initially limit flood risk premiums by insurers paying into a national ‘pot’ that will cover payments to those in areas of high flood risk. This coverage will then transition to a point where the increased risk is to be covered by increased individual premiums, probably over the next 20 years or so.

The consultation also concluded that there is currently insufficient evidence to justify Government intervention in the market’s provision of property insurance cover for small businesses.

What does this mean? Well, businesses will be paying higher premiums for being situated in a flood risk area or will need to install flood defences to protect themselves, with domestic properties gradually making the change over the coming years.

Flood doors installed for Thames Water

Flood Control International’s Secure Flood Proof Doors have recently been installed at a number of Thames Water treatment sites that require additional flood protection. Our steel flood doors use a permanent adaptive seal that means that the doors can be used daily and are permanently flood-proof.

The flood doors are also 60 minute fire doors and are fitted as standard with security rated handles, 3-point locking and emergency escape bars. Flood doors can come with access panels over the main door leafs to allow access for very tall equipment, or can be fitted with inflating seals where a dead-level threshold with no step is required.

Pivot Flood Gates for Electricity Substation

Thorpe Marsh Electricity Substation has recently received a number of innovative double pivot flood gates from Flood Control International.

The gates allow rapid deployment of flood defences by a single operative, for spans up to 6 metres wide and 700mm high.

Gas-filled struts mean that operating weights are minimal, and the barriers are always ‘on-station’ ready to be deployed.

These floodgates have also recently been installed at a number of COMAH chemical containment sites – to keep chemical spills and any potential fire-fighting water on site. A selection of sealing materials means that our chemical containment barriers are able to be used with hydrocarbons, fuels, acids and other volatile chemicals.

South Wales Double Floodgates

Four homes in South Wales are better protected from flooding following the installation of new flood gates by Flood Control International.

The double ‘lift-hinged’ floodgates were chosen by the Environment Agency as the best solution as they operate on a level threshold, open away from the floodwater and could fit within the tight footprints specified.

The floodgates allow unhindered access for vehicles and disabled persons when open, and can be quickly and easily operated by the homeowners to give dependable flood protection in the time of flood.

Worthing Hospital Pivot Flood Gates

Twelve innovative pivot flood gates as well as a number of demountable flood barriers have recently been installed at Worthing Hospital as part of their flood protection programme following flooding in 2012. The floods last June were the fifth event in seven years, and caused over £350k of damage.

The barriers protect vital parts of the hospital’s infrastructure and were selected due to their ease and speed of operation. The barriers are permanently located next to the openings they protect, and can just be pulled down and locked in place should flooding threaten.
