How do you protect vital underground transit infrastructure from flooding without compromising the open, light-filled design of a modern concourse? Flood Control International’s completed project in Gothenburg demonstrates how architectural flood protection can combine high-performance engineering with a discreet, integrated finish.
The system was installed around four major escalator pits, where permanent glass flood barriers form part of the concourse architecture rather than appearing as a separate defensive structure. Their transparent design helps preserve sightlines and natural light while providing a permanent line of flood defence around vulnerable openings.
The glass barriers work in combination with slot-in flood barriers positioned across the tops of escalators, stairwells and lift openings. When deployed, these removable barriers complete the watertight perimeter and help prevent surface floodwater from cascading into the underground transit system.
Flood protection is most effective when it is considered early in the design process. This enables architects, engineers and project teams to coordinate barrier positions, structural interfaces, access requirements and finishes as part of the wider scheme. The result can protect critical infrastructure while maintaining the intended appearance and everyday use of the space.
With the Gothenburg installation now complete, the finished concourse shows how discreet flood defence can become part of the architecture from the outset. It follows FCI’s earlier project update, which introduced the integrated approach while installation was underway.
Gothenburg is one example of a broader requirement for flood protection that balances resilience, access and design quality. FCI has also recently secured a high-end residential project in Connecticut, alongside public-sector projects in Florida and California, extending this approach across demanding architectural and infrastructure environments.
From major transport hubs to luxury residential developments, Flood Control International designs, manufactures and installs custom flood protection solutions where performance, engineering and architecture must work together.
