The start of 2025 has been marked by severe and widespread flooding across the UK, causing significant disruption to daily life, infrastructure, and the environment. Heavy rainfall, snowmelt, and extreme weather conditions have led to devastating consequences for communities across England, Wales, and Scotland. This blog provides a breakdown of the January 2025 flooding, focusing on its causes, impacts, and responses.

The flooding was primarily caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and snowmelt, which overwhelmed rivers, drainage systems, and low-lying areas. The Met Office issued multiple weather warnings, including yellow and amber alerts for rain, snow, and ice, across large parts of the UK.

In the South-East, rivers such as the Medway, Teise, Beult, Wey, Rother, Arun, Ouse, and Cuckmere experienced rising water levels, leading to flooding in towns and villages. The Environment Agency (EA) issued eight flood warnings, indicating that flooding was expected, and dozens of flood alerts, meaning flooding was possible.

The situation was made worse by the rapid snowmelt in regions like Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, who were among the worst-hit regions in the Midlands where major incidents were declared due to the extreme weather. The River Soar overflowed near Barrow upon Soar, flooding caravan parks and residential areas. In Lincolnshire, 103 properties were confirmed to have been internally flooded on January 6 and 7, with the number expected to rise as more reports came in.

The North-West bore the brunt of the flooding on New Year’s Day. Greater Manchester declared a major incident as floodwaters submerged roads, railways, and residential areas. Train services were severely disrupted, with operators like TransPennine Express and Northern advising passengers against traveling. Key rail routes, including those between Manchester and Manchester Airport, Liverpool Lime Street, and Huddersfield, were rendered impassable due to waterlogged tracks. Floodwaters in Warrington and Burnage, Manchester, reached several centimetres, causing significant damage to infrastructure and properties. Cars were abandoned in floodwaters, and emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue stranded residents.

More than 1,000 properties were damaged in the South West when storm Hermina hit, bringing with it extreme weather and disruption. A yellow weather warning was issued for rain across the counties and heavy rainfall resulted in landslides, and flooding making travel very dangerous.

The January flooding caused widespread disruptions to rail and road networks across the UK. In the North-West, Network Rail received 45 flood alerts from the Environment Agency, with several key routes rendered impassable. In the South-East, rail services were disrupted due to waterlogged tracks and flooded stations. Airports in Scotland were also temporarily closed due to snow and icy conditions, further compounding travel chaos.

Network Rail worked to drain floodwaters and repair damaged infrastructure, aiming to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. The efforts of railway workers were praised for mitigating the impact of the flooding on transportation.

Emergency services, local councils, and the Environment Agency played a crucial role in responding to the flooding. In Leicestershire, firefighters used boats to rescue residents from a flooded caravan park and in Lincolnshire, a multi-agency group was established to support flood victims and coordinate recovery efforts.

This January’s severe flooding serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact extreme weather events have on communities, infrastructure, and the environment. While emergency response efforts were commendable, the scale of the flooding underscores the urgent need for long-term solutions to address climate change and enhance flood resilience. Investments in infrastructure, improved drainage systems, flood defence systems and collaborative efforts between government agencies and local authorities will be essential to protect vulnerable regions from future flooding.
